Ask Dr Adebayo: “Painful Breast Lump”

Ask Dr Adebayo

Dr Adebayo,

I am 24 and have a lump under areola and it hurts and really hurts to the
touch. I’ve had it for over a month now. What’s causing it cause I’m too young for
menopause and I haven’t been breast feeding or pregnant for two yrs. I haven’t seen my
period but not pregnant but gained weight as if I was. What’s wrong with me?

M

Dear M,

I cannot say with exact precision what is wrong with you due to a lack of many details.
However, from what you have described, it appears you may have an hormonal imbalance.
The painful breast lump you have may be related to the unexplained stoppage of your
menses.

I strongly suggest you visit your gynecologist(doctor specializing in treatment of women)
for a thorough assessment.

All the best.

Dr. Adebayo

“Help me! My manhood is small”

(Published with permission)

Dear Dr. Gbenga,

Thanks for your insightful mail which I normally receive as a forward from one of your recipients. I have been able to learn some few things. Applying your recommendations has been very helpful to say the least.

I want you to help me out on an issue, though very confidential but I have the feeling that I should seek your expert advice.

My challenge is about my small manhood.

I am above 30 years but it’s so small that it looks like that of a 2 year old. When am aroused there’s a small change in the size but otherwise, it’s so small that u hardly notice it. This has kept me off relationships though am going out with a lady now. But I feel so incomplete.

Is there anything that can be done to increase the size (length & width). Please help as this is giving me a concern. I’ll be getting married this year.

H.F.

Hi H.F.,

Thanks for your compliments.

About your fears, the truth is that many men have the fears that you have and the fears are mostly unfounded! The penis of the vast majority of us is the same size when erect irrespective of the size when flaccid) and that is 5-6 inches in length when fully erect.

While many products claim they can increase penile size, there is no concrete evidence to support these claims. In fact, many of this products are actually harmful.

Moreover, sexual fulfillment has little to do with the size of the penis of the man. It has more to do with what he does with it. I once had the fears you have now as a young man. However I have come to realize I shouldn’t have worried. What makes my wife enjoy sex with me is not because of the size of my penis, but how much she loves me and this is closely tied to how much we communicate with each other; How much she knows I care about her.

Pleases I suggest you discuss the topic of sex with your fiancée as well as your mutual expectations.

I am not exactly sure how small a 2 year old penis is; however if what you are saying is that your penis has not developed since when you were 2 years old, there are some medical reasons to why that may be so. Please do see a doctor to about this.

Be rest assured that whatever the size of your penis is, a rich and deeply satisfying sexual live can be yours. Do not be shy to discuss your fears with fiancée and your doctor.

I also suggest you read my articles on intimacy in marriage here and here.

All the best.

Dr Adebayo.

Guest Post: A Tale of Two Governors by Paul Odafe Utho

fashola and sanusiThe recent developments in the Nigeria polity makes one wonder if we are progressing or retrogressing and if we are living under a military regime or in a democratic dispensation. Military regimes are known for their obnoxious decrees & immovable decisions, irrespective of the feelings of the citizens and how it affects them. Rather than dialogue with citizens over policies and decisions, military regimes are a “NO GOING BACK” government that would rather deal ruthlessly with any person or persons who try to stand against their policies.
On the other hand, a democratic government is one that is expected to consult with the electorate on policies that affect them. It is supposed to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people, as opposed to a military regime.

However, going by certain policies and pronouncements that have emanated from certain selected or elected individuals in our current democratic dispensation, one needs to check again to confirm whether we are under a democratic government or a military regime.

Two particular policy makers and drivers come to mind at such a time and a review of some of their actions and policies indicate that our democratic experiment is far from near perfect.
Consider the “NO GOING BACK” posture in recent times of the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

GOVERNOR BABATUNDE RAJI FASHOLA (SAN) OF LAGOS STATE

The expansion of the Lekki-Epe expressway and construction of three toll plazas along the axis through a Private Partnership initiative of the Lagos State government was one that generated a lot of controversy and one that has left a sour taste in the mouth of the people. Without taking the citizens and electorates into consideration, the government embarked on this lofty dream only for citizens to discover that they have to pay for it after all. When the residents of the community decided to stage a peaceful protest against the collection of tolls on the axis, thugs and mobile policemen were sent to beat them up, threatening them never to return or face very terrible consequences. As far as the governor was concerned, it was a “NO GOING BACK” policy that has come to stay. You either accept it or relocate from the axis.

After fire gutted the Tejuosho market in Yaba about four years ago, the government of Lagos state stepped in with a promise to rebuild the market but little did the owners of stalls and sellers in the market know that by this action, the government had stylishly taken over the market and that they will be asked to pay millions of naira before they can gain access to the market again. Today, the market is yet to be completed & the sellers are squatters all around Yaba. If the people had been consulted, they would have opted for a simple affordable modern market but again, it is a “NO GOING BACK” policy of the governor.

In 2012, 788 striking Medical doctors on the payroll of the Lagos State government had their appointments terminated for what the government referred to as “misconduct and insurbodination”. While the face off continued, innocent citizens of the state who voted the governor into office suffered untold medical challenges while some died in the process. Rather than make efforts to resolve the grievances, the governor took a “NO GOING BACK” posture. It had to take the intervention of good spirited Nigerians, including the National Assembly and senior citizens of the state before the governor shame-facedly rescinded the decision & recalled the sacked doctors.

Recently, the governor, through his commissioner of Transport & Commissioner of justice, passed the Lagos Traffic Law, a law which stipulates various fines for as little as ‘snacking’ while driving, irrespective of how long you have been in traffic in a city like Lagos. One wonders how such a law could have been passed without any public awareness campaign, stake holders involvement, proper training of law enforcers, proper logistics etc. In the midst of public outcry against the implementation of the law with its resultant consequences on first time offenders, the governor has said there is “NO GOING BACK” on this policy.

Time and space will not allow us mention the excesses of KAI officials who chase hawkers all over the metropolis, seizing their wares & arresting the hawkers but we have never witnessed any public destruction of the seized wares, most of which are consumables. The only explanation could be that the items are destroyed in the mouth and stomach of the officials themselves. What about the policy on land use, multiple taxation, the new law on beautification that carries a fine of Two Hundred & fifty Thousand Naira for defaulters and the proposed law on the teaching of Chinese language in Lagos’ schools?

In all of this, the stance of the governor is “NO GOING BACK”.

MALLAM SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI, GOVERNOR,CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA

Flip the coin and let’s consider the “NO GOING BACK” policies of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. When he came into office in 2009 and embarked on his sweeping reforms in the banking industry, sacking bank chiefs and their top management staff, a lot of the shareholders of some of the banks cried out to high heavens over the “illegal” take over of the banks but there was “NO GOING BACK”. Even with obvious inconsistencies in the policy, the CBN Governor still went ahead with its implementation, calling the bluff of his constituency. Today, the labour market is awash with former bankers more than from any other sector, most of whom were not paid their severance pay despite working for as much as fifteen years.

His “NO GOING BACK” stance on the introduction of Non Profit Banking policy is still causing ripples in the polity.

After the peaceful protests that greeted the increase in the pump price of petrol by the Federal Government on January 1st, 2012, the Central Bank Governor was one of those who spoke in favor of the new policy but admitted that he can’t remember the last time he paid for fuel from his personal funds. Even when it became obvious that Nigerians have been short changed by an oil cabal, his “NO GOING BACK” stance didn’t change.

His recent “NO GOING BACK” policy on the printing of N5,000 notes and conversion of the smaller denomination of our currency to coins is the height of insensitivity and reels of a military regime. Despite the odds against the policy and fears expressed by citizens, the CBN is still going ahead (or has already gone ahead) with the printing of the N5000 note as if this is the most important business of the day. How will coin dispensing ATM machines help the situation? Will the N5000 note create more jobs? Will it stimulate the economy? Will it put food on the table of common Nigerians? Will it reduce the cost of living?

In a form that reminds one of military dictators, the Central Bank Governor went ahead to call a senior citizen and former president of Nigeria “a bad economist”, simply because he didn’t support his new policy. One can only imagine what the fate of the former president and those “bad economist” that have criticized this policy would have been if this was a full military regime.

If democracy is a government of the people, then the people should be at the forefront of government policies. The citizens should have a say in the drafting of policies that affect them, rather than policies imposed on them. One will not be quick to forget the pronouncement of the President on the 29th of May 2012 when Unilag was renamed Maulag. That issue is still in the law courts and shows that citizens shouldn’t be taken for granted. There must be room for wide consultations no matter how sincere or good an intending policy may be.

Citizens should be treated with respect, our voices heard and our rights upheld. We should not be treated as mere voting accessories on Election Day.

It is hoped that the governor of Lagos State as well as his counterpart, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, as well as other co-governors will begin to realize that power belongs to the people, not those who rule them. This is not a military regime but a democratic government, and in a democratic government, the voice of the people is Power.

Will you eat a soup made from human placenta?

Waiting for your comments:

After Wang Lan delivered, she brought home a baby girl and her placenta, which she plans to eat in a soup — adopting an age-old practice in Chinese traditional medicine.

The health-giving qualities of placenta are currently creating a buzz in Western countries, where some believe it can help ward off postnatal depression, improve breast milk supply and boost energy levels.

But placentophagy — the practice of eating one’s placenta after birth — is relatively common in China, where it is thought to have anti-ageing properties, and dates back more than 2,000 years.

“It is in the refrigerator now and I am waiting for my mother to come and cook it to eat. After cleaning, it can be stewed for soup, without that fishy smell,” Wang said, adding she believed it would help her recover from delivery.

Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of a unified China, is said to have designated placenta as having health properties some 2,200 years ago, and during China’s last dynasty, the dowager empress Cixi was said to have eaten it to stay young.

A classic medical text from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) said placenta — which lines the uterus and is key to the survival of the foetus — was “heavily nutritious” and “if taken for the longer term… longevity will be achieved”.

China’s state media says the practice of eating placenta has re-emerged over the past decade. One maternity hospital in the eastern city of Nanjing reported that about 10 percent of new parents took their placenta after childbirth.

Internet postings swap recipes on how to prepare placenta. One popular health website suggests soup, dumplings, meat balls or mixing it with other kinds of traditional Chinese medicine.

While trade in the organs has been banned since 2005, pills containing placentas ground into powder are legally available in Chinese pharmacies — indicating unwanted placenta is somehow making its way to drug companies.

“It is a tonic to fortify the ‘qi’ and enrich the blood,” a traditional medicine doctor at Shanghai’s Lei Yun Shang pharmacy said, referring to the “life force” that practitioners believe flows through the body.

“Sales are very good. Basically, every time we have supplies, they sell out very quickly,” a clerk at the shop told AFP.

And it’s not just mothers who want to eat the placenta.

One new father in Shanghai who did not want to be named said his relatives were eager to try the sought-after item. “My wife and I were still in the hospital… and they ate it,” he said.

But strong demand has created a thriving black market with hospitals, medical workers and even mothers selling placentas in violation of the law.

Last year, authorities investigated a hospital in the southern city of Guangzhou for selling placentas for 20 yuan (USD 2) apiece.

“They (nurses) take the money and use it to buy breakfast,” a source told a the local Xin Kuai newspaper.

They fetch a higher price in other parts of China like the eastern city of Jinan, where dealers ask as much as 300 yuan per placenta, most sourced from hospitals, the Jinan Times said last year.

Last month, South Korean customs said they had uncovered multiple attempts to illegally import over 17,000 capsules apparently containing the powdered flesh of dead babies.

Experts have said the pills may actually be made from human placenta, raising concerns that China’s trade in the organs has started to go international.

Some people, meanwhile, are averse to the idea of eating the organ.

“I know it’s good for health, but the idea of eating human flesh is just disgusting. I cannot do it,” said Shanghai accountant Grace Jiang, who opted to leave the placenta after giving birth to her son.

5 commonly misquoted and misapplied scripture passages (Part 2)

bible magnifying glassStudy and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.

                                                                                       2 Timothy 2:15 (AMPLIFIED VERSION)

Today we shall continue our series on 5 commonly misquoted and misapplied scripture passages by looking at the 2nd and 3rd commonly misquoted passages in our study.

In case you missed it, you can catch up with the previous study here.

Isaiah 64:6

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Isaiah 64:6 (KJV) (Emphasis mine)

This is another rather commonly misquoted passage of the bible. The especially quoted segment is that which says, “…our rightousnesses are as filthy rags”. It’s quoted by different people to achieve different things:

  • In congregations where they practice communal confessions of sins.
  • Preachers sometimes when they seek to show how much we all need the mercy of God
  • When someone is seeking to underline the hopelessness of anyone trying to be “righteous”.

In all this cases (and probably the many more I have not captured), an undesirable end-result is many believers having an enduring caricature-perception of their “righteousness”.

Right Application

Once again, let’s subject the passage to the questions of who, when, and whom.

  • Who wrote it? Prophet Isaiah (speaking prophetically as a voice for the children of Israel)
  • When was it written? Not going into details of actual dating, it suffices to say it was written under the dispensation of the Law during a period of apostasy and disobedience by the children of Israel.
  • To whom was it written? It was a prayer uttered by Isaiah to God on behalf of the sinning Children of Israel. The state of the children of Israel is revealed in the preceding  verses and the verses that follow:

“You welcome those who cheerfully do good, who follow godly ways. But we are not godly. We are constant sinners, so your anger is heavy on us. How can people like us be saved? We are all infected and impure with sin. When we proudly display our righteous deeds, we find they are but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall. And our sins, like the wind, sweep us away. Yet no one calls on your name or pleads with you for mercy. Therefore, you have turned away from us and turned us over to our sins.Isaiah 64:5-7 (New Living Translation) Emphasis mine

We can see at least three things in this passage:

  • The Israelites recognized they were constantly sinning and had become objects of God’s anger
  • In the light of their fallen state, they recognized any good acts they were doing were utterly worthless.
  • In spite of all these, the writer stated that God recognizes and welcomes people who do good and follow godly ways (vs 5a), i.e. there were righteous people with righteous acts acceptable to God. The Israelites were just not those people.

It is hence obvious that the statement “righteousness being like filthy rags” was not a reference to the good acts of bible studya believer but that of a people or persons mired in sin.

1 John 1:8

To further their arguments,Some may throw our 3rd commonly misquoted passage of scripture which says: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us”. Rather this passage sheds more light on the subject of righteousness and how we attain it.

What is Righteousness?

Simply put, righteousness is the attribute of being right with God. This attribute has 2 components:

  • Right Standing with God.

We obtain this not by anything we can do. It is a gift of God which we receive at salvation.

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV)

“But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:21-24 (NIV)

The above passages show us that righteousness in Christ Jesus is first and foremost a gift. A gift needed by everyone seeing that “all have sinned” and no one can say “I have no sin”. God freely gives us “right standing” with him if we accept Jesus Christ as Saviour. 1Jn 1:8 is referring to this our common need for salvation from sin rather than our perpetual state in Christ Jesus.

“Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours”

I Corinthians 1:2 (KJV) Emphasis mine

By virtue of Christ’s completed work, I am a saint! God christened and called me a saint even before I did anything.  That is simply awesome!

  • Right Doing

This is the second side of the coin. Our right standing will not be complete without “right doing”.

“Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.”                                                       1 John 3:7 (New International Version)

Preacher at PulpitOur right-standing with God through Christ gives us a platform to do right things. Without this right-standing, Isaiah 64: 6 will be the reality of anyone trying to do “right things”: all his righteousness will be as filthy rags. He is like a person putting the cart before the horse, he is going nowhere.

In Christ Jesus however, our righteous acts have powerful and tremendous consequences both now and in the world to come.

“And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.”                                         Revelation 19:8 (NKJV)

The righteous acts we are weaving in time, we will wear in eternity. So the next time tells you all your righteous acts are like filthy garments, just say to yourself, “…not me! I do right things like my Father in Heaven and I am weaving a pretty garment to wear in eternity”.

Feel free to share your thoughts and comments.

5 commonly misquoted and misapplied scripture passages

bible magnifying glass

Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.       2 Timothy 2:15 (AMPLIFIED VERSION)

The centrality of the word of God (as contained in the bible) to the life of a Christian is without question very critical. The strength or otherwise of a Christian is directly proportional to the level of God’s word he has in his heart. The scriptures declare that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Faith is not a product of age or race or sex. It is a product of the word of God: faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17).

Believers have a responsibility to accurately and skilfully interpret and apply the word of God. The will of God for His children is that we be thoroughly grounded by knowing His will and counsel concerning all matters (Colossians 1:9). This will has been revealed to us through His word. Our responsibility is to search it out through correct analysis under the guidance of the Holy Spirit whom he has given us to lead us into all truths.bible study

Today, I want us to examine five scripture passages that are commonly misapplied in the light of our new creation realities in Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 55:8-9

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9(KJV)

I have heard this scripture used by many to depict the hopelessness of the situation of man. If they had stopped there, I wouldn’t have complained. For scripture declares that the thoughts of the unregenerated man is desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9). But for the most time I have heard someone quote this scripture, it is usually addressed to a body of believers to tell them how far from God we all are. I guess some use it as a form of humility speech to “humble” themselves so to speak before God. That is a wrong application of this passage. It has made many a believers come to a conclusion that they are very far from God with no hope of remedy.

Right Application: Early in my Christian journey (over 17years ago), I learnt that when I am studying a passage of scripture I should ask myself:

  • Who wrote it?
  • When was it written?
  • To whom was it written or who is it speaking to or who is it talking about?
  • What is there for me (e.g. warning, promise, commandment, example etc)?

Answering just 3 of these questions regarding the passage, the following become obvious:

  • Who wrote it? Prophet Isaiah (in this case speaking as an oracle of God).
  • When was it written? Not going into details of actual dating, it may suffice to say it was written under the dispensation of the Law during a period of apostasy and disobedience by the children of Israel.
  • To whom was it written? The answer to this is just in the previous verse:

“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:7 (KJV)”.

Hence if you are neither wicked nor unrighteous, verses 8 and 9 cannot be describing you. The state of wickedness and unrighteousness is the extreme opposite of the expected position of the believer. As Christians, God’s way must become our way. His thoughts should be our thoughts. We are commanded to be imitators of God as dearly beloved children (Ephesians 5:1). An imitation of a thing is a replica of that thing. This imitation is what is referred to as godliness.

Yes, you may stilPreacher at Pulpitl be a work in progress. You may not yet be all you can be yet. But that discomfort and discontentment you feel is simply as a result of you wanting His way to become your way. And that is because his thoughts are already working in you. Scriptures declare that we have the mind of Christ! (1 Corinthians 2:16). The word of God declares that God is at work in us to will (in other words to think) and do (in other words to do things His way) according to his good pleasure. (Philippians 2:13)

So the next time someone quotes that scripture to you and tells you your way is not His way, nor your thoughts His thoughts, just say to yourself, “…not me. I am not a bastard. I am like my father!”

…To be continued. More common misapplications. Will be glad to hear from you.
